The duo's music, both originals and traditional, is steeped in hard Chicago blues, dark Delta ballads and kicking Cajun stomps. They'll even throw in Vaudeville jazz, Hawaiian, Mexican tunes along with traditional Irish and English reels.
JC and his sister Angelina worked together professionally for ten years performing locally and internationally. They work as a duo, independently and as a part of their five-piece band The Dance Preachers. They began performing in folk clubs in their early teens and have developed their sound throughout their 20s drawing inspiration from acoustic roots, jazz, folk and blues.
JC and Angelina have travelled extensively playing at festivals and clubs as far afield as Russia, Japan and the USA, working with and supporting numerous high-profile acts such as: Waterson/Carthy, Pentangle, Dr John, Buddy Guy and Van Morrison. JC recently completed a two-year world tour with Midge Ure.
Over the last five years JC and Angelina have concentrated on recording original material and to date 4 CD albums are available. These Albums have recently enjoyed exposure on various European radio stations, on the main stage at Cambridge Folk Festival and on BBC Radio 3’s `Late Junction´.
“JC and Angelina, a sibling duo dishing out a fine mixture of cajun country blues, jazz and folk. Their recent album Dance When You’re Living is a hugely impressive thing.”
Time-out magazine (London)
“They caused quite a sensation. The crowd refused to let them go without a 3rd encore”
Burnely Blues festival review (Max Haymes)
“JC and Angelina’s musical taste runs like the Mississippi river, deep and wide...Angelina is one of the best female blues vocalists in Britain - a Bessi Smith or Memphis Minnie without the scratches...JC Grimshaw is both a fine songwriter and instrumentalist”
Manx Blues Society (Dave Wade)
"They began in the middle of the hardcore Thatcherite years when everyone was into synthesizers. Folk, Skiffle, Hawaiian music all went into the melting pot. They owe their roots to folks clubs, that element of the singer-songwriter bringing along their guitar. Their own songwriting had started. It led them to the obscure borderline where they are now."
- JC and Angelina's father John Rufus Grimshaw
"It's honest, uncomplicated music to do with emotion. Having said that, I don't want to be a carbon copy of Bessie Smith. I'm a nineties girl."
- Angelina Grimshaw
Aside from a couple of live tours as Midge Ure's guitar/mandolin player (with fellow Village Bike musician Jake Rodriques), JC has continued to record and play live with his sister Angelina Grimshaw.
JC and Angelina live shows often feature special guests and impromptu moments. Pretty Things guitarist and former Rolling Stone, and Isle of Wight resident Dick Taylor added electric guitar to JC and Angelina's Root Sap tape. There are also a talented string of Island musicians to be found playing on Village Bike recordings including Doug Watson, Keith Newnham and Rick Stokes.
When both are coming to Germany for playing some great shows they mostly do their shows together with the German singer/songwriter Jan Cubon and the piano player Burkhard Schmidt, both from the band T.Basco.
This year they also wrote some songs together and performed them live under the name “The Circle of Three” Simply a great musical collaboration of great musicians.
