SAYOWA - Heavy Grooves

Heavy and percussive music is what defines the Brazilian band Sayowa that came to prove that it’s possible to explore the variations of metal music, which was already done by other bands, but in a unique way.

The band has just recorded their first album, with songs that explore the energy of heavy music by joining low tuned guitars with the huge heaviness of “tambores” (drums) and percussions, that ad consistency and identity to the band’s music.
“Sayowa” means “brother” in the Akawaio language, of an indigenous tribe from the north of Brazil.

The band started in late 2000, when drummer Raphael met singer/guitarist Theo, who already played with bassist Juca, and as a trio the band recorded their first demo CD. During the recording of this demo, guitarist Adriano joined the band and after some time as a four piece, Roberto and Jura joined also, playing big heavy brazilian drums and establishing the band’s actual line up. The band’s debut on stage was on the “Freakshow” Festival, which took place in a famous club in Rio de Janeiro, in late 2002.

In March 2003 Sayowa played in Rio as the support act for Sepultura, one of the most respected bands of this genre in the world, on a show that impressed even the Sepultura members, for the pulsing energy of the band’s music. In the beginning of 2004, Billy Graziadei, Biohazard’s singer and guitarist, remixed, in New York, one Sayowas song, that will be in the band’s launch album. In April of the same year, Andreas Kisser, Sepulturas guitar player, recorded participations in three songs that also will be in the band’s debut album.

The lyrics, written in Portuguese and English by Theo, are focused basically on daily situations that need a change. Besides being social criticism, they are human criticism that comes up as Sayowas goal is to make music that touches people and make them realize that reality is a lot far from perfection that we must work very hard together for a little change, and even harder to change ourselves. In the end of 2005 Sayowa had been on tour with the Hardcore Band Pro-Pain, to open their shows in Europe. After that they’ed played one more German-Tour, which is called “Days of Rumble”, with the German Band Low Life Loretta. During this tour the common song SANGUE BOM was recorded and releases on the selftiteled EP. It includes two upcoming songs of each Band.

Last yeas SAYOWA recorded their second longplayer wich is produced totally by Andreas Kisser from SEPULTURA.
